Happy New Year!

Dear Friends,

As we approach the end of the year, I want to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for the tireless efforts of our Shelter Care and Healthy Foundations staff at Watson. These dedicated professionals have provided a safe and supportive home for over 110 children in our shelter this year and have worked with over 25 families through the Healthy Foundations program to help them build a strong foundation for the future.

While the impact we have on children and families can be quantified in numbers, it is the individual stories and experiences that truly make a difference. One such story is that of a child who has faced an unthinkable past, but whose future is now brighter thanks to the support and care of our staff at Watson and those in our community, Elsie's story is below.

On behalf of the entire team, I want to thank you for your support and kindness throughout the year. We are grateful for your contributions and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of children and families in the coming year. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,
Mark Roberts
Executive Director
Watson Children’s Shelter

Elsie Story –
During the summer, 9-year-old Elsie was placed in the care of Watson. At first, Elsie was very shy and struggled to make friends. However, as October approached, she began to open up and feel more comfortable with her new surroundings.

Every year we ask the children what they want to be for Halloween. While some children knew exactly what they wanted to be, Elsie wasn't sure. When asked, she responded, "I don't know; the adults usually dress me." The staff reassured Elsie that it was okay, and that she could be herself or whatever she wanted to be.

Elsie has a heartbreaking backstory. She was placed at Watson because her guardian had been trafficking her for the past three years in exchange for drugs and money. From the age of 6, Elsie has experienced unimaginable horrors, including food insecurity, homelessness, and sexual assault.

As we sat with Elsie, I was overwhelmed with emotion. But I also reminded myself that Elsie was now safe and would not be hurt at Watson. She would have the chance to receive the love, support, and therapy she needed to cope with her past trauma.

Over time, we witnessed Elsie transform from a shy and scared girl into a more confident and brighter individual, thanks to the support and care she received at Watson and within our community network of care.

Every child at Watson has experienced so much trauma in their lives, and I am grateful that we can provide a safe place for them to heal and find hope. While no child should have to spend the holiday season at a shelter, for those who have escaped abuse, neglect, and abandonment, Watson is here to support them and provide a sense of wonder and possibility for the future.
